On Thanksgiving Day in 2006, Patrick Powers was at the beach in Orange County, California feeling thankful for the weather that allowed him to surf. The movement of the surfer embodies a surefooted pleasure and determination as the water arcs above his head. Very well done!

Here's hoping your Thanksgiving brings you a sure footed pleasure whether you're catching waves somewhere or sitting in a easy chair waiting for your food to digest.

Today's photo of the day comes from San Francisco based photographer, kellinasf. I love this photo because it's the conventional image of a beautiful landscape, and as one Flickr user comments, "looks like an image one would find in a children's story". The photo was taken on Kihzi Island in Russia; a 7km long and .5km wide island accessible by boat from the town of Petrozavodsk.

Kihzi Island is a UNESCO world heritage site, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia, but has no lodging for overnight guests. The island features an ensemble of wooden churches, chapels and houses - including the 22-domed Transfiguration Church.

The last time I visited Las Vegas, I was 12 years old, and with my parents (you can imagine what a great time that was, both for my kid-saddled parents and me). Though I've never thought much about returning for myself, my English husband has never been, and I've always maintained that Vegas is one of those cities that has to be experienced to believe. I think this awesome photograph shared by justin fain in our Gadling Flickr pool proves my point.

Today's photo comes to us from Flickr user SuBho_Photography, who caught this vibrant, dynamic shot. Though the photo doesn't say where it was taken, I picture the scene somewhere along the Ganges in India. I particularly like the sense of movement and rich colors: the arc of purple liquid, the man's outstretched arm and the tiny circular depressions from raindrops on the river surface. It's an image that feels full of life and rich detail.

Seeing as the Leonids meteor shower gave some of us a show earlier this week, it seems fitting to pay homage to the night sky this weekend. I love this photo in particular because it proves that the world still turns and time passes ever so consistently from one second, moment, hour, day, month, year to the next.

This lovely shot entitled "Tunnel View" comes to us from ohad*, who writes, "Shooting into the dark, I decided to shoot a portrait of Yosemite Valley. Half dome in the distance (with airplanes rising) and El Capitan on the left. Shot at 10mm f/3.5 for 601 seconds." The different lines of movement from the lights of cars that cut through the dark valley to the rising airplane leaving its pink trace toward the heavens and the curving stars really make the world feel alive and allow us to appreciate just how beautiful it really is.

This juxtaposition of images in Andrey Dorokhov's shot taken in Glasgow, Scotland is one that attests to the importance of having a terrific eye--and being at the right angle at the right moment. The interplay between light and shadow also adds interest and texture. The woman's gaze may stay steady forever--just like the statue will hold its stance. But how long will the bird be a willing subject?

Nothing makes a more beautiful photo than rolling sand dunes at sunset. Having recently experienced the tranquil oasis of Huacachina in Peru, I now fully appreciate the dry, natural beauty of the world's deserts.

This particular photo was taken in Tunisia but expert photographer kellinasf. The warm colors and grooved textures of the sand contrast so well with the cool blue sky. The grooved dune side in the left shadow also adds to the photo's richness, don't you think?

Is there a better National Park in the United States than Yellowstone? This shot from flickr user SenzEnina makes the case that, no, there isn't. With wildlife like wolves, bears, mountain goats, and, of course, bison, as well as hundreds of geysers and hot springs, Yellowstone should definitely be on your Bucket List.

Floyd Dean (fdean55) has some amazing pictures that just begged to be shared here with our Gadling readers. This beam of light shining through a cave at Antelope Canyon in Arizona really caught my eye.

It's as if someone installed a Solatube on the roof of this place. Spectacular shot, Floyd.

I'm sure this won't be the last time you see his work appear on our Photo of the Day.

On the other end of the badass animal spectrum that Annie described on Monday for is the cow. The happy guy in this bucolic scene was snapped by Bernard-SD in Big Sur, California. If cows in Ohio, where I live, could see where this one munches, they'd be jealous. What a view!

While I usually prefer photographs that feature subjects at close distance in great detail, I'm fascinated by the aesthetic quality of this photo by Michael Goldstein. Bright winter light and dramatic shadows frame the worn inscriptions well, with the composition anchored by the battered blue door in the center. It's a unique take on a monument that's been photographed many times.

The photo was taken at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and finished in 1810 as an honor to the Napoleonic Wars. (Additional fun fact: The Arc is so big, that Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it in 1919, as part of a parade to commemorate the end of World War I)

As we close today's "Wild America" theme, I couldn't resist sharing this great shot of American buffalo shot and shared by JasonBechtel. The image was captured at The Wilds, a wildlife conservation area in southern Ohio. True personification of "home on the range," I think!

Anyone looking for a taste Caribbean colonial charm should head for Puerto Rico's Old San Juan. It's an area with loads of atmosphere - brightly colored pastel mansions, cobblestone streets, and a surprising street art scene. I particularly liked the bold colors and gritty charm of this photo in Old San Juan by Flickr user robertrexdotcom. It reminded me of my visit last year, wandering the quiet streets.

I wanted to find a good shot of clouds for today's photo, and I think this one reflects my mood perfectly. Clouds, to me, are good metaphors for life, and these clouds represent for me the beauty of life, the end of the day, and the dawning of a new day. When traveling through life, it's important to note moments when the clouds part and you can see things (your life, your surroundings, etc.) more clearly.

This gorgeous photo was taken by Patrick Powers in Orange County (which is another, more personal reason I chose it). The colors may be slightly over-enhanced, but the fiery effect of the photo is quite good, don't you think?

I've always wanted to visit Costa Rica. And it's not just because I want to stay in the Boeing 727 hotel. The incredibly talented Fdean55 (this guy is a real pro) captured a taste of Costa Rica with this shot of two dolphins basking in the sun near Golfito.

A close-up view of a building's features is one way to show it off its beauty This Buddhist temple's door is a perfect example. LadyExpat, who took this photo in Daejeon, South Korea, moved in for an intimate look so that the textures and nuances of the blue paint, the worn wood and the metal are a study of contrasts. Plus, think of the story they tell of the people who have passed through these doors over the years.

There's a certain beauty in simplicity, even in regard to photography. I find this photo by lecercle to be a great example of taking simple subject matter and making it interesting and beautiful through composition & contrast.

The photo was taken in Kashid, which is a beach town on the shores of the Northern region of Maharashtra, India. The ocean that the subjects are looking out over is the Arabian Sea. There are a few of small hotels in Kashid, and the rest is privately owned, but it's quickly becoming a surfer's paradise.

You've probably noticed a lot of talk today about GPS systems, so I couldn't resist sharing this image placed in the Gadling Flickr pool by rkzerok. He says: "My GPS shows about 50 higher than the marker on Mauna Kea." Awesome.

I'm feeling particularly ethereal today, and Flickr user cmvoekel's photo at the Tate Modern in London does a good job of capturing my mood. The geometric patterns of light, the shadows and the silhouettes of the people all suggest a scene that looks downright "otherworldly."
